This Hobbit Book of Wisdom is a cherished treasure. You may look into it's welth of knowlege.

"A love of learning was far from them, but there remained still a few in the older families who studied their own books, and even gathered reports of old times and distant lands from Elves, Dwarves, and Men. Their own records began only after the settlement of the Shire, and their most ancient legends hardly looked further back than their Wandering Days."
-- LotR, author's Prologue

"The Book of Hobbit Wisdom" is just such a book. Its first editor is not known, although it is rumored to have been Frodo Baggins himself or a close relative. It is apparent that the core of the book was put together using the books written by Biblo and Frodo Baggins after their successive journeys. What is certain is that the book has been passed down through generations of hobbits, each generation in turn adding its own bits of wisdom.

Structurally, the entire book contains over 480 various proverbs. Nearly 70% of these relate directly or indirectly to the journeys of the aforementioned Bagginses. The translation and "web-ifying" of these proverbs is a difficult yet ongoing project, so you may expect new proverbs appearing here regularly. Also, the complete manuscripts of the original texts are not all in our posession. We regularly receive additional texts from other studious researchers which we add to the site as well. If you have found such a text, you may submit it here.

Regarding the numbering of proverbs, it must be remembered that as the compilation has passed through many hands throughout the years the original order of proverbs is largely unknown. With this undertaking, we have attempted to categorize the proverbs according to the main focus of the proverb (Journeys, Character, etc.). This process, along with continual additions of translated proverbs, means that the page numbers are relatively transitory. So, for ease of referencing, we have given each proverb its own unique "Hobbit Wisdom" number by which it may be referenced. These reference numbers are in the order that we received the manuscripts (which seem somewhat random). In any case, each proverb has its own number which will not change and from which it may thence be referenced. The identification begins with an "HW" and concludes with its unique number.

On a personal note, we have found that the hobbit proverbs are in no-ways "obscure" or particularly difficult to relate to, as might first be expected when reading some texts from different races. On the contrary, the wisdom contained within these pages have shown themselves to be emminantly applicable to most readers, even those under widely differing circumstances. We suspect this has something to do with the simple and practicle nature of hobbits, even when authoring more conceptual works such as proverbs. So, without further ado... we hope you enjoy -- and are enlightened by, "The Book of Hobbit Wisdom".

Sincerely,
the Editors

P.S. The Book of Hobbit Wisdom is not affiliated with J.R.R. Tolkien and the Tolkien family. It was assembled and edited by fans.

The wisdom of hobbits has been recorded in The Lord of the Rings. Now, we have discovered a new tome containing many more snippets of hobbit wisdom. And for the first time, it has been made available to all the world on our web site.

Uh oh! it appears the Hobbit book of wisdom has been taken off Hobbit Lore. Please wait patiently while I try to regain it. Thank you.
